The road to Claude's house and studio in the Kimberley, near Fitzroy Crossing, is flanked on each side by two very different geological features. On one side are jagged grey/black limestone ridges and the other brilliantly coloured layers of pink, red, brown and white sedimentary rock. The sacred sites Claude paints are here and part of the same formation as the Mimbi Caves, one of the oldest inhabited rock sites in Australia over 40,000 years old. "Painting is the strongest way we can tell our stories, keep our communities healthy and our young people focused. It is not only the way of the past for us, it's also the way of the future."
